The challenge
Northwind ranked well for years, then slid two pages after a Core Web Vitals update. Every page shipped 1.8MB of JavaScript, and marketing needed a developer for the smallest copy change.
What we did
- 1Audited every plugin and removed nine of the eleven
- 2Rebuilt the front end on Next.js with static generation for all marketing routes
- 3Moved content into a headless CMS with live preview for the marketing team
- 4Set a 120KB JavaScript budget enforced in CI
- 5Mapped and tested 340 redirects before cutover
The speed difference was obvious the day it launched. What I did not expect was how much faster our own team could move afterwards.
