7 reasons shoppers abandon their cart, and how to fix each one

Most abandoned carts come down to a handful of small doubts at checkout. Here's what causes them and practical fixes for Australian online stores.

A shopper who adds something to their cart has already done the hard part. They found you, picked a product and decided they want it. When they leave at checkout, it's usually because of one small doubt nobody answered.

1. Surprise costs at checkout

Delivery fees, deposits or surcharges that only appear on the last step feel like a bait and switch. Show delivery costs early, on the product page and in the cart, and explain any deposit in plain words.

2. Unclear delivery dates

"Will it arrive by Friday?" is one of the most common reasons people hesitate. Show your cut-off time and delivery days, and give an estimated date where you can.

3. They just want to ask one question

Sizes, ingredients, compatibility, gift wrapping. A quick, accurate answer at the right moment often decides the sale.

4. Forced account creation

Let people check out as a guest. You can invite them to create an account after they've paid.

5. Not enough payment options

Australian shoppers expect cards, digital wallets and often buy-now-pay-later. Check which ones your customers actually use before adding more.

6. Trust signals are missing

Reviews, a clear returns policy, an Australian business name and real contact details all reassure a first-time buyer.

7. They got distracted

Sometimes life just gets in the way. A friendly reminder, sent once and at the right time, brings many of them back.

Catching the doubt in the moment

The best time to answer a doubt is while the shopper is still on the checkout page. Algoritmi Assist notices when someone hesitates at checkout and offers help once, politely, with the answer they were looking for. It never pushes, and it only mentions offers you've approved.
